Speaker 1
Hi. Welcome back to another episode of Tina Arena, the podcast where I talk about my growth journey, things that I've learned and things that I'm basically experimenting on and trying and, you know, figuring out as we go. So this is something new that I'm doing right now. If you're watching on YouTube, you'll notice that there's no video.
00:00:22:05 - 00:00:52:13
Speaker 1
It's because I'm outside and I'm going for a walk. And I decided to record this podcast as I'm walking because ever since I got back from my vacation in the Dominican Republic, my step count has gone way down. And if I learned anything in January and February, it was that I actually really enjoy walks and having a high step count.
00:00:52:15 - 00:01:13:15
Speaker 1
It makes me feel good about myself and I don't know, something about walking really improved my mental health in the dead of winter. So. Coming back from vacation, I have had a little bit of issue readjusting back into real life.
00:01:13:15 - 00:01:51:02
Speaker 1
I'm not feeling motivated to work, so walking, I think, is going to help me feel a little bit better. So that's what I'm doing now. I decided, you know what? Screw you to not I mean, I love you guys, I love YouTube. but, you know, I don't need to make a video every time. And I actually would love to spend time editing the YouTube and making the YouTube videos more interesting, but that's just not on my radar right now.
00:01:51:02 - 00:02:40:18
Speaker 1
I don't have the capacity to take on editing. I would love to, but. I'm just going to focus on the core goal of podcasting, which was just to get my voice out there to practice using my voice, and to practice having difficult conversations. So here we are going for a walk outside and I'm talking to myself, I don't know if you can tell, but I'm actually kind of struggling with my breathing because this is actually way harder than I thought it would be, but I'm really enjoying it.
00:02:40:18 - 00:02:44:16
Speaker 1
It's actually a beautiful sunny day today in Canada.
00:02:44:16 - 00:03:11:23
Speaker 1
the weather is probably just above freezing, so it's quite cold and bundled up. And the thing about going for a walk outside when it's freezing is that it makes me proud of myself. And the more wins that I can get, the better, the more that I can do things that I'm proud of, the more momentum I will gain.
00:03:11:23 - 00:03:19:07
Speaker 1
I think what I've also come to realize is that I was also very inspired on my walks,
00:03:19:07 - 00:03:37:11
Speaker 1
So lately, I wasn't spending too much time walking and I've just felt like empty. I felt uninspired, essentially, and I wasn't really sure what was going on.
00:03:37:12 - 00:04:08:14
Speaker 1
Maybe it was my hormones, but like, I'm technically ovulating this week, so that's when you are supposed to be full of energy and full of zest, right? When you're ovulating. But I don't feel that way. So. So this is my way of trying to get back into rhythm. And I feel like I go through this cycle pretty often.
00:04:08:15 - 00:04:14:12
Speaker 1
last year I posted a video like, I feel like I'm in a funk and this is what I'm going to do about it.
00:04:14:14 - 00:04:41:14
Speaker 1
Well, this time I'm in a funk and I feel like everything is in place. I am sleeping fine, I am eating fine. I just had a great vacation. I spent time with my family. There's just something that feels off. And so I am just going outside and frickin looking at trees, hoping that it will make me or help me feel better.
00:04:41:14 - 00:04:47:23
Speaker 1
I feel like I haven't really talked about anything at all. I don't know if anyone's going to find this rambling useful,
00:04:47:23 - 00:04:57:22
Speaker 1
I guess the take home message is walking has been so beneficial for my mental health that I feel like I'm going to push it on everyone that I talk to you like, are you walking?
00:04:58:00 - 00:05:17:13
Speaker 1
Are you going outside? Are you getting fresh air? It's not the same thing to be walking at a treadmill and I don't know, the sunshine just just curing me. I really do feel better already, and probably even walking for less than ten minutes at this point.
00:05:18:02 - 00:05:42:19
Speaker 1
I've never really been much of an outdoorsy person. I'm always inside. I've always been on the computer. I grew up on the computer, actually, so I feel like being outside right now is really healing. Very, very healing. Just something that I really haven't had a lot of.
00:05:42:19 - 00:05:47:07
Speaker 1
So I'm soaking it all up.
00:05:47:07 - 00:06:03:03
Speaker 1
let's talk about walking and talk about all the things that I love about walking. Walking is more than just moving your body. Walking gets you outside and it gets you into nature.
00:06:03:03 - 00:06:06:09
Speaker 1
You open your eyes and you see sunlight.
00:06:06:09 - 00:06:11:20
Speaker 1
You're creating vitamin D with your sunlight exposure.
00:06:11:20 - 00:06:27:19
Speaker 1
you're helping your circadian rhythm. When you go outside early in the morning, it alerts your body that it's morning so that your body knows approximately 12 or so hours later, it's going to start preparing for bed, and it will start releasing melatonin.
00:06:27:19 - 00:06:43:14
Speaker 1
So you can get cozy, get tired, and start preparing for bed. Walking, obviously is a way to get your body moving, which helps you circulate your blood. Your lymph system.
00:06:43:14 - 00:06:52:15
Speaker 1
The best part about walking is that it is incredibly easy on the body. Almost anyone can just go outside for a walk.
00:06:52:17 - 00:07:11:06
Speaker 1
You don't need any special tools. I mean, you could say the same thing about running, but eventually you'll spend a lot of money on running with new shoes, new gear. gel packs and all that stuff. But with walking, you don't need any of that.
00:07:11:06 - 00:07:38:15
Speaker 1
Actually feel better already. This is a great idea. I don't know if this podcast. Is going to be any great, but, I mean, I guess you guys have a glimpse of what goes on in my head as I'm walking. And actually, it's kind of been cool to walk and talk. It's a lot harder than I thought it would be because I'm just walking.
00:07:38:17 - 00:08:06:15
Speaker 1
I didn't think that I would, you know, get tired, but actually I am. And I actually injured my foot in the Dominican Republic, potentially because I tied my shoes too tight or it's an overuse injury. The tendons on the top of my foot really hurt. And actually they're just really starting to act off right now. And I am just about to turn onto my street.
00:08:06:15 - 00:08:41:06
Speaker 1
So I'm going to go home and stop this walk because I don't want to further my injury. Unlike David Goggins. I feel pain and I'm going to stop. But the nice thing about walking is that because walking is low intensity and it is very easy on your joints, it is something that you probably should do when you're injured because it gets your blood moving, and because it helps with circulation of all the fluid in your body.
00:08:41:08 - 00:08:49:06
Speaker 1
It will help you heal faster. So that old adage of, you know, rest, don't move and elevate.
00:08:49:06 - 00:08:58:11
Speaker 1
We know that that's not the best way to heal anymore. Definitely rest when your injury is brand new and give yourself a little bit of time to recuperate.
00:08:58:11 - 00:09:06:21
Speaker 1
but if you've been out for more than a few days, then it's time to start moving again. And it's often walking that you can start with.
00:09:06:23 - 00:09:33:02
Speaker 1
So, like me, I do have an injured foot, but I'm not staying off of it completely. I want to go for my walks. I'm going for light, steady walks and not pushing it too hard. Actually, I was on the StairMaster earlier this morning and that didn't aggravate my foot at all. So find ways to move in which your injury doesn't get aggravated because it is essential that you get your blood moving.
00:09:33:02 - 00:09:55:12
Speaker 1
Anyways, that's all I have for you today. I'm actually really out of breath, so we're going to pause it there. Remember, if you enjoyed this episode, please share it with one of your friends.
